It was indeed the hottest August in Denver history — but a little relief is finally on the way.
The average temperature in the metro area last month was 77 degrees, climbing above the previous record average of 76.8 degrees, set in 1937, according to the National Weather Service.
The temperature Wednesday reached 98 degrees, tying the 1960 record for the hottest Aug. 31.
It was one of six daily record- high temperatures either tied or broken in August this year. The month was also the sixth-hottest month in Denver history.
The high temperature Thursday was 96 degrees, one degree short of the record of 97 set in 1995.
A front was expected to pass through overnight, dropping the low temperature into the 50s and keeping the high temperatures below 90 through the Labor Day weekend and into next week.
Still, the string of 72 consecutive days above 80 degrees will continue, shattering the record of 59 set in 2002.
