AIR FORCE ACADEMY — Safety Jon Davis and cornerback Anthony Wright are expected to have big seasons for Air Force.
The two senior secondary players got off to a fast start, each collecting an interception Saturday at Falcon Stadium against South Dakota.
Davis grabbed his seventh career interception in the first quarter and Wright picked off his 11th in the third. Wright contributed seven tackles and Davis had six.
Despite the winning start, coach Troy Calhoun had some criticism.
“To give up a touchdown like we did because of a busted coverage is unacceptable,” Calhoun said.
His remarks were aimed at a 35-yard touchdown pass from South Dakota quarterback Dante Warren to receiver Jeremy Blount with 7:35 left in the game. The play resulted in the final score of 37-20.
The Falcons are looking ahead to Saturday and a Mountain West opener against No. 14 TCU, which lost Friday night at Baylor 50-48.
Wright was glad to be talking about a fast start and having some competition early in the game.
“I was glad South Dakota came in with some fire,” Wright said. “It helps us set the stage for our upcoming games. I hope this is an omen for a good season.”
Injury report. Air Force junior defensive back Brian Lindsay left the game with an undisclosed injury. Calhoun didn’t have details. Lindsey missed much of last season with a broken collarbone.
