The Broncos waived embattled cornerback Perrish Cox today.
It’s rare that a player who starts nine games as a rookie is released prior to his second season. Cox, however, struggled throughout training camp and in the preseason. The final decision was made when he played poorly in the Broncos’ final preseason game Thursday night at Arizona.
He did not make the final 53-man roster even though another cornerback, Syd’Quan Thompson suffered a season-ending Achilles injury.
Cox’s position with the club appeared to be vulnerable when he was arrested by Lone Tree police last December on two felony sex assault charges. Cox has pled not guilty to the charges and his trial is pending. He is free on $50,000 bail.
While Cox’s legal troubles could not have helped his situation, it was his disappointing performance that led to the Broncos’ decision.
Broncos general manager Brian Xanders is scheduled to meet the media this afternoon to talk about the team’s moves.
