LIBERTY, Mo. — Strong defense and Dan Palmer’s three touchdowns helped Colorado Mines hammer William Jewell 33-0 in the teams’ season opener Saturday.

Colorado Mines held the Cardinals to 121 total yards.

The Orediggers finished with 369 yards, fueled by Palmer’s 134 on the ground.

Orediggers quarterback and RMAC preseason offensive player of the year Clay Garcia completed 14-of-21 passes for two touchdowns and one interception.

Colorado Mines’ Cody Renken had 52 yards on receptions, including a touchdown in the first quarter.

Fort Lewis 48, South Dakota Mines 30

DURANGO — The Skyhawks (1-0) scored five touchdowns in the second half.

Freshman running back Van Gramman led the way by scoring two touchdowns in a 10- second span.

Van Gramman scored on a 70-yard pass from Tim Jenkins with 7:53 left in the game. He returned a fumble on the ensuing kickoff 17 yards for another touchdown with 7:43 remaining.

Fort Lewis finished with 253 return yards. The Skyhawks had eight punt returns for 126 yards and five kickoff returns for 127 yards.

Angelo State 35, Western State 12

GUNNISON — The Mountaineers (0-1) gave up three first-quarter touchdowns and struggled on offense. Curtis Prock scored the only touchdown for Western State on a 4-yard pass from Miles Gorham. Lloyd Tucker kicked two field goals.
