NEW YORK — Donald Young’s second consecutive upset of a seeded player and Andy Roddick’s rather routine victory mean there will be four American men in the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the first time since 2003.
The 22-year-old Young beat No. 24 Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina 7-5, 6-4, 6-3 on Sunday, two days after eliminating No. 14 Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland.
Roddick, who is seeded 21st, defeated 81st-ranked Julien Benneteau of France 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
No. 8 Mardy Fish, the top- seeded American, reached the fourth round by winning Saturday.
A fourth U.S. man was guaranteed to join the group when John Isner served 17 aces in a 7-6 (9), 6-4, 6-4 victory over fellow American Alex Bogomolov Jr.
Venus turns to Twitter.
Venus Williams said she’s eager to return to action after withdrawing from the U.S. Open because of an autoimmune disease.
Williams took to Twitter on Sunday, writing: “Thank you everyone for all your well wishes! It’s good to have support! Looking forward to getting better and back on tour!”
When the seven-time Grand Slam singles champion pulled out of the tournament before her second-round match Wednesday, Williams revealed that she’s been diagnosed with Sjogren’s syndrome, which can cause fatigue and joint pain.
She tweeted Sunday: “Thank you 4 sharing all your sjogrens & auto immune stories w/me. Feels good to know I’m not alone! feel better to you and your loved ones!”
