Longmont police on Wednesday cited two people for trespassing related to an accident in which a 17-year-old girl’s legs were severed when she tried to jump onto a moving freight train.
Charles Hamilton, 25, of Gillette, Wyo., and a 17-year-old boy were ticketed. A third man, who fled the scene, has been identified by police.
“We have contacted him and encourage him to come in,” said Longmont police spokesman Cmdr. Jeff Satur.
Investigators are still trying to piece together why the men and Anna Beninati tried to hop onto the train as it rolled through Longmont on Monday afternoon.
Beninati slipped as she attempted to jump aboard and fell underneath the train, severing both of her legs. She remains in serious condition at Denver Health Medical Center.
Beninati will not be cited, Satur said.
“We have a lot of compassion for this young lady,” he said. “We just don’t feel it’s in anyone’s interest to charge her, and we don’t want to add that extra stress.”
Beninati is a student at Colorado State University. Her family released her name Tuesday afternoon along with a statement thanking bystanders who cared for her immediately after the accident.
