BOULDER, Colo.—A former football player for the University of Colorado accused of raping a woman has been sentenced to one year of work release after reaching a plea deal.

The Daily Camera reports () that Michael Sipili was sentenced Wednesday morning. He received a four-year deferred sentence for the felony charge and four years of probation for the misdemeanor charge along with the one-year work-release sentence.

The former linebacker pleaded guilty in July to lesser charges.

Boulder District Judge D.D. Mallard told Sipili that he “made a terrible mistake.” But the judge concluded, “I think that a better future is going to be there for you.”
