CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The latest quarterback competition at Miami ended before it started.
Jacory Harris will start when the Hurricanes play No. 15 Ohio State on Sept. 17, a decision that’s not a surprise — but came with surprising timing. Miami announced the choice Wednesday, just one day after coach Al Golden said the competition between Harris and Stephen Morris for the first-string job would continue through at least the weekend.
“We’ll allow those guys to compete here Thursday, Friday, Saturday, then figure it out,” Golden said Tuesday. On Wednesday, that plan was scrapped.
Morris was the starter in Miami’s 32-24 loss at Maryland on Monday night. He completed 19-of-28 passes for 195 yards, but fumbled the ball away once in the early going and threw two interceptions in the final minute.
NBA owners, union talk, to meet again today
NEW YORK — NBA owners and players met for about 5 1/2 hours, plan to resume negotiations today, and could even sit down again Friday.
While neither side would say if progress is being made, the frequency of the discussions seems a good sign. They met only twice in the first two months of the lockout that began July 1. But they went for about six hours last Wednesday, and decided they would go multiple days this week. Both sides said they could even carry over the discussions into a third consecutive day if things go well during today’s session.
“We agreed that we’re going to sit here for as many days as we can to see whether we can make progress, but we agreed not to characterize anything at all,” commissioner David Stern said.
Experts claim boxer Gatti murdered in 2009
NORTH BERGEN, N.J. — Former junior welterweight champion Arturo Gatti was murdered two years ago in Brazil, a panel of forensic evidence experts said as it presented the results of a 10-month investigation initiated to challenge the official version that Gatti committed suicide.
Brazilian authorities initially considered Gatti’s wife a prime suspect and arrested her, but released her soon after and concluded Gatti had hung himself with a handbag strap. Eduardo Trindade, a lawyer assisting Gatti’s family, said he would have the panel’s report translated and presented to prosecutors in Brazil within the next month or two and would push for an indictment of Amanda Rodrigues Gatti.
