A proposal to build a 27,000-square-foot temple in south Fort Collins will go before the City Council after Larimer County commissioners repealed a zoning condition that would have prevented even an application to build the temple.

Both Tom Donnelly and Lew Gaiter voted Tuesday to remove the “residential only” restriction on about 14 acres of Wayne and Janice Leistikow’s property at Timberline and Trilby roads after a three-hour public hearing. The third commissioner, Steve Johnson, was absent.

The elected officials agreed that the 23 residents who spoke — 14 against and nine in favor of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple — brought up valid concerns about traffic, property values and neighborhood character.

However, they also agreed that those issues should be heard and decided by the city of Fort Collins, which is planning to annex the parcel and will hear the development request.
