DETROIT — Kansas City running back Jamaal Charles was carted off the field midway through the first quarter Sunday with a left knee injury, and coach Todd Haley said after the game the team was still awaiting a definitive word on his status.
Charles, who rushed for 1,467 yards last season, was lunging toward the first-down mark along the Detroit sideline when he was pushed out of bounds by defensive back Chris Houston. Charles collided with the legs of Detroit’s mascot and immediately began clutching his left leg.
The all-pro back did not return to the game, which the Chiefs lost 48-3. An ESPN report Sunday night said Charles suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
“We’ll probably know a lot more on him here in the next 12 hours or so,” Haley said.
It appeared Charles might have hurt himself while planting the leg as he went out of bounds. He seemed unwilling or unable to plant it again as he fell to the ground. Charles also appeared unable to put any weight on his left leg as he was helped onto the cart.
Packers safety Collins carried off.
Green Bay Packers safety Nick Collins was carried off the field on a stretcher after he injured his neck in the fourth quarter against the Carolina Panthers.
Collins was injured as he tried to tackle Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart on a catch. Stewart tried to hurdle Collins, whose head appeared to hit Stewart’s left hip as he dived for Stewart’s legs. Collins’ neck bent awkwardly on the hit and he landed facedown on the turf with 11:57 left.
Collins gave a slight wave to the crowd while being carried off the field. In a postgame statement on their website, the Packers said Collins had “normal feeling and complete movement” in his extremities and would be kept overnight in a hospital for observation.

New York Jets all-pro center Nick Mangold has a sprained right ankle, but X-rays were negative.
Mangold limped off the field late in the first quarter of the Jets’ 32-3 victory over Jacksonville and did not return.
Coach Rex Ryan said Mangold would get an MRI exam today.
• Bills receiver Roscoe Parrish is out indefinitely after hurting his left ankle in a 38-35 win over the Oakland Raiders.
The Bills lost starting right guard Kraig Urbik, who will miss a few weeks with a left knee injury.
