DENVER—La Nina is back. But a forecaster says it will probably end up weaker than last winter, when some northern Colorado ski resorts reported record snowfall, and mountain snowpack was so high that it led to some spring flooding.

Klaus Wolter of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Thursday that La Nina has returned from its summer vacation. He says in Colorado, the second straight year of a La Nina winter is often drier than the previous year.

He says southeast Colorado figures to be fairly dry over the next six months. The region was extremely dry last winter and missed a lot of moisture that hit the mountains.

Wolter says his preliminary estimates suggest that a repeat of last year’s record-breaking snows is unlikely.
