Snowboard innovator Jake Burton, who helped take the sport from the back hills to the Olympics, says he is undergoing chemotherapy for testicular cancer. Burton, 57, says he has three months of treatment ahead but his cancer is “as curable as it gets.”

In the late 1970s, Burton quit his job in Manhattan with the idea of promoting snowboarding at mountain resorts, where it was viewed largely with disdain. Over the decades, he built a multimillion-dollar business and gets much credit for bringing the sport to the masses.

Burton told his employees of his cancer in a memo. He said he didn’t know what his work schedule would be but assumed “it will have its ups and downs.”
