A 21-year-old man suffered damage to his spinal cord and other injuries late this afternoon when he apparently jumped into the Arkansas River just outside Florence.

“He had had conversations with people earlier in the day indicating he intended to harm himself,” said Fremont County Sheriff’s Capt. Don Pinover.

He has not been named.

Motorists passing by who saw the man jump pulled him to safety about 400 feet down river, Pinover said. He was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs.

He plunged about 30 feet from the bridge into about 7 feet of water at about 5:30 p.m., Pinover said.

The man worked in Florence, but it was not clear where he lived.
