Undefeated junior welterweight boxer Mike Alvarado of Denver will face Colombia’s Breidis Prescott on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez fight Nov. 12 in Las Vegas, promoters said.
In Prescott, the heavy-hitting Alvarado likely will face the toughest test of his career. The fight also will be the brightest stage yet for Alvarado, with the Pacquiao-Marquez pay-per- view card expected to be one of the most-watched this year.
“That’s a pretty good fight isn’t it? I think so,” Bob Arum, president of Top Rank promotions, told ESPN. “It’s a good test for Alvarado and a good fight.”
Previously, Alvarado (31-0, 22 knockouts) won a unanimous decision over Gabriel Martinez in Denver on July 30.
Prescott (24-3, 19 KOs) is coming off a Sept. 10 close decision loss to Paul McCloskey in Ireland. In 2008, Prescott earned a first-round knockout of Amir Khan in England. It was Khan’s first and only loss before he went on to win two titles in the division.
Both fighters are known as knockout-seekers, leaving their matchup as a potential crowd-pleasing bout. In his past 11 fights, Alvarado has gone the distance just twice.
The 31-year-old has steadily moved up the short list of contenders at 140 pounds.
“I’m right there,” Alvarado told The Denver Post in July. “I’ve proved myself. I’ll fight anybody. Whatever it takes. The best needs to fight the best.”
