The El Paso County Sheriff’s Department found enough evidence in an internal investigation into a fatal car crash to fire Deputy Rodney Fannin.

The department would not release any of its findings, however, because it might hamper the criminal investigation into the Aug. 3 crash, according to a press release this afternoon.

Fannin, 42, was off-duty when he allegedly ran a red light in the Ford Explorer he owns and hit Vivian Elmo’s Honda Accord at Curtis Road and Colorado Highway 94 near Schriever Air Force Base east of Colorado Springs.

Fannin was on probation for another careless driving charge stemming from a crash earlier this year. He also pleaded guilty to careless driving in 1996, according to court records.

Elmo, 41, was an Air Force active-duty reservist with more than 20 years’ experience. A resident of Colorado Springs and a native of Louisiana, she was assigned to the 310th Space Wing at Schriever.

Fannin suffered moderate injuries, the Colorado State Patrol said.

He was cited with a misdemeanor traffic offense, careless driving resulting in death, and has an Oct. 19 court date. He put on leave after the fatal crash and fired on Sept. 23, the Sheriff’s Department announced today.
