PORT-AU- PRINCE, Haiti — A document obtained by The Associated Press reveals Haiti’s new president is seeking to restore his country’s disbanded army. The document is a proposal by President Michel Martelly’s government to hire and train 3,500 soldiers over the next three years. The troops would eventually replace 12,000 U.N. peacekeepers.
Haiti’s military was disbanded in 1995 after years of abuses and coups.
