Lake Tahoe’s Squaw Valley ski area — which was acquired by Denver-based private-equity fund KSL Capital Partners last year — is merging with neighbor Alpine Meadows.
In the vein of the Whistler-Blackcomb, Snowbird-Alta and Big Sky-Moonlight ski-area partnerships, the merger opens a 6,000-acre ski area sprawled across eight mountains on the shores of Lake Tahoe.
The move could bolster a potential Lake Tahoe Olympic bid for the Winter Games in 2022, which is expected to compete with a Denver bid.
The long-rumored merger puts KSL at the helm of the new venture as majority owner, with Alpine Meadows ownership team JMA Ventures holding an ownership stake.
