Three people, including a 7-year-old boy and a teenage girl, were seriously injured Tuesday when a fire started by a candle ravaged a southwest Denver home.
Family members said 7-year-old Juan Alvarado’s call to 911 may have saved the family.
Juan, 15-year-old sister Diana Mendez and his mother, Pat Garcia, 47, were all heavily sedated in a hospital Tuesday, 9News reported.
The children’s stepfather, Julio Garcia, ran up and down the street calling for help and tried to put the fire out with a garden hose, witnesses told the TV station.
The fire started about 4 a.m. at 455 S. Eliot St., said Lt. Phil Champagne, Denver Fire Department spokesman.
Firefighters pulled the three burn victims to the front lawn and started “full resuscitative measures,” Champagne said.
“Hopefully, we gave them a chance to survive,” he said.
Fire investigators have determined the source of the blaze to be an “unattended candle,” Champagne said.
