The South Platte and Eagle rivers, two of many, are producing well, particularly for flyfishermen. Kokanee action is picking up, notably at Green Mountain, Wolford and Williams Fork. Fishing for trout has been improving at South Park reservoirs, while North Park and Red Feathers area waters are seeing excellent action. Yellow perch continue to be the hot bite along the Front Range at such places as Boyd, Douglas, Bear Creek, and Aurora. Wiper action is picking up, notably at Pueblo. Many reservoirs are reducing inspection hours, and North Sterling closes to boating at the end of the week. Check websites before heading out.

OUT IN THE FIELD: Information wanted

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife is looking for information on a bull elk poaching incident this month near Copper Mountain. The carcass was found by Stafford Creek, about a mile from Interstate 70. Wildlife officers think the bull was killed in early September, and only the head, antlers and a few portions of the hide were taken.

Missing hiker.

Those hunting around the Holy Cross Wilderness Area of the White River National Forest are asked to be on the lookout for evidence that may help authorities discover the fate of a Chicago man who has been missing since last fall.

James Nelson, 32, was dropped off at the Fall Creek trailhead Oct. 3, 2010, for a 25-mile hike. He didn’t show up for his scheduled pickup a week later. No trace of Nelson has been found, despite a four-day search.

Hunters who head into the area are asked to watch for discarded hiking equipment or possible human remains. Search- and-rescue dogs had picked up Nelson’s scent off a trail near Lake Constantine.

Road closure.

Buffalo Pass Road is closed on the west side of the pass for repairs and will last into November. Those most affected by the closure are those with permits in Unit 14. According to the Steamboat Pilot, the closure started Sept. 19 and is expected to last six to eight weeks. That will affect the Oct. 15-19 and Oct. 22-30 elk seasons. The closure starts at Dry Lake Campground.
