Coaches in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association agree with the media who cover the league: The University of Denver will win the league title.
The Pioneers received seven of 12 first-place votes in the annual Grand Forks (N.D.) Herald preseason poll released Wednesday. North Dakota got four first-place votes and was tabbed for second, followed by Colorado College, which received the final first-place vote. CC was picked second in the media poll. Coaches have correctly predicted the champion in four of the last six years.
Marshall, Barczuk receive soccer invites.
Former University of Colorado soccer player Nikki Marshall and current Buff Amy Barczuk have been invited to a special under-23 women’s national team soccer camp where they will be evaluated for potential call-ups to national team camps as preparations begin for the Olympic qualifying tournament in Vancouver, British Columbia, in January.
Marshall, who plays professionally for the Boston Breakers and is in her first season as an assistant coach at Northern Colorado, and defender/midfielder Barczuk will join 20 other elite pro, college and high school players at the camp in Carson, Calif., which starts Sunday and runs through Oct. 7.
The players will work under U.S. women’s national team coach Pia Sundhage and two other top team officials.
CU men’s golf team nationally ranked.
The University of Colorado men’s golf team is back in the top 25 in the national rankings for the first time in three years, both in computer-based rankings and the Golf World coaches poll.
The Buffaloes are No. 10 in the GolfStat and No. 14 in the Golfweek rankings, which factor in performance, head-to-head competition and other statistics, and No. 24 in the coaches poll. CU has opened the season with a win at its own Mark Simpson Invitational and a first- place tie for the title in the Gene Miranda Air Force Invitational. It’s the first time in school history that the Buffs have won back-to-back major tournaments.
Colorado Section PGA picks up honor.
The Colorado Section PGA received the first Herb Graffis Award, presented for “extraordinary or exemplary contributions in player development.”
The award is named in honor of the late golf historian, author and founder of golf magazines, the National Golf Foundation and co-founder of the Golf Writers Association of America
