DENVER—A Colorado couple is accused of operating a $17 million Ponzi scheme that roped in investors in 13 states with promises of big potential returns on investments in diamonds and trading international notes.

Federal prosecutors say Richard and Marie Dalton of Golden are charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud, wire fraud and interstate transportation of stolen funds. Their phone number wasn’t listed.

Prosecutors say the couple’s company, Universal Consulting Resources LLC, guaranteed returns of 48 to 120 percent to investors and used new investors’ money to pay early investors.

The Daltons also are accused of using investor funds to pay $936,000 for their home, among other things.

If convicted, they could face up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
