DENVER—The price of Powerball tickets in Colorado is doubling.

The Department of Revenue says the move should raise more money for projects like state parks and schools. The move is part of a change taking place in 42 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands where Powerball is played.

The changes were announced earlier this year by the Multi-State Lottery Association.

KMGH-TV reports ( ) the prices of tickets will be raised from $1 to $2 beginning Jan. 15.

The state says Powerball jackpots will start at $40 million instead of the current $20 million.
