FORT BRAGG, Calif. — A man suspected in two fatal shootings was shot and killed Saturday after a massive, month-long manhunt in the forests of northern California, authorities said.

Aaron Bassler, 35, had been sought in the murder of Fort Bragg Councilman Jere Melo, who had been investigating reports of a marijuana farm when he was ambushed Aug. 27. Police said Bassler was cultivating about 400 poppy plants.

Bassler also was wanted in the Aug. 11 shooting of Matthew Coleman of the Mendocino County Land Trust.
