NEW YORK — A helicopter that crashed into the East River, killing one of the five people aboard, was missing part of the main rotor when it was hoisted out of the water, a federal investigator said Wednesday.
Mark Rosekind of the National Transportation Safety Board said the pilot reported problems shortly after taking off Tuesday. The agency will try to determine whether the rotor was damaged on impact with the water or whether it contributed to the pilot’s loss of control, Rosekind said.
