Open Range Communications is up for sale after announcing layoffs Wednesday, according to the website .

The Greenwood Village- based rural wireless provider laid off 122 employees, leaving a skeleton crew of 48, the telecommunications website reported.

Most of the eliminated jobs are in markets outside of Colorado, where it serves communities such as Berthoud, Fort Collins, Fort Lupton and Frederick.

The website also reported that Open Range chief executive and president Bill Beans has resigned and that chief financial officer Chris Edwards apparently is running the company.

The company also told FierceWireless that it will stop taking on new customers but will continue providing service to existing customers — believed to be more than 20,000 in a dozen states.

The Denver Post’s calls and e-mails seeking comment from the company and its officials were not returned. Ann Schrader, The Denver Post
