AUSTIN, Texas — Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert, who lost his starting job after two games and then had season-ending shoulder surgery, plans to transfer.
Gilbert was given an unconditional release from his scholarship to find another school. In a statement, Gilbert did not say where he planned to go but indicated he has visited several schools and will visit more while finishing this semester at Texas. A junior, Gilbert would still have two years of eligibility.
• Two of Boise State’s three football players with Dutch ties were suspended at the start of the season because of recruiting violations and for taking illegal benefits, including one player who received a car and payments to cover auto insurance, NCAA officials said.
The statement issued by the NCAA provided the first explanation for the one-game suspension handed down to senior safety Cedric Febis and the four-game suspension served by sophomore receiver Geraldo Boldewijn. Officials say the investigation into sophomore defensive tackle Ricky Tjong-A-Tjoe is still pending.
• Missouri is hoping to join the Southeastern Conference but would have preferred an offer from the Big Ten that never came, a university official said.
“That’s what’s left,” the official said, referring to the SEC.
• Junior quarterback Paul Harris has been dismissed from the Northwestern State football team for disciplinary reasons.
Lynx takes 2-0 WNBA lead
MINNEAPOLIS — Seimone Augustus scored 36 points to lead Minnesota’s second-half surge, and the Lynx moved within one win of its first WNBA title by beating the Atlanta Dream 101-95 in Game 2 of the league championship series Wednesday night.
Jessica Adair added 13 points in 18 minutes in a reserve role for the Lynx, which took a commanding 2-0 lead by overcoming 38 points by the Dream’s Angel McCoughtry. Game 3 in the best-of-five matchup is set for Friday night in Atlanta.
Eriksson is courting Beckham
LEICESTER, England — Former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said he has offered David Beckham a chance to join English Premier League club Leicester.
Beckham’s Major League Soccer contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy is set to expire in November and Eriksson, now in charge at Leicester, said he has discussed a possible linkup with the 36-year-old midfielder.
Beckham has also been linked with Premier League clubs Tottenham and Queens Park Rangers, as well as French side Paris Saint-Germain.
