Traffic jams in Rocky Mountain National Park are not an uncommon thing during the peak summer months, when over a million visitors stream through the park. Fall, however, brings a different kind of jam-one affectionately known as an elk jam.

This time of year, elk have one thing on their minds-mating-and the bull elk’s display of calling out to prospective females draws many people out of their cars to watch the show. Rocky Mountain National Park ranger Leanne Benton says it’s the female elk who pick their mates.
