COLBY, Kan.—A 55-mile stretch of westbound Interstate 70 in northwestern Kansas has reopened after being closed earlier because of high wind and blowing dirt.

Kansas transportation officials closed the highway’s westbound lanes around 3:30 p.m. Central time Thursday from Colby to the Colorado line. The transportation department said poor visibility on the Colorado side of the border created hazardous conditions for drivers.

The highway was reopened at 6 p.m. An 8-mile stretch of westbound U.S. 24 from Colby to Levant was also reopened after being closed for about 90 minutes.

The National Weather Service reported non-thunderstorm wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph in northwestern Kansas on Thursday afternoon.
