BOSTON — Boston University took a four-goal lead in the second period Saturday night and held on to beat the University of Denver hockey team 4-3.

The eighth-ranked Terriers (2-1) scored three times in less than three minutes of the second period when the Pioneers’ special-teams struggles and sloppy play let them down.

Goaltender Adam Murray misplayed the puck behind his net and Corey Trivino scooped it up and beat him 19 seconds into the period to give BU a 2-0 lead.

BU scored its second consecutive short-handed goal when Matt Nieto scored less than a minute later and Wade Megan’s power-play goal at 2:58 gave the Terriers a commanding 4-0 lead. BU took control of the shot battle with a 15-7 advantage in the period.

“Give BU credit for playing hard and capitalizing on our miscues,” DU head coach George Gwozdecky said. “We showed some magic in the third period, and I’m pleased with the progress we made this weekend against two quality opponents in Boston College and Boston University.”

The Pioneers beat No. 1 Boston College 4-2 on Friday.

Luke Salazar put the third-ranked Pioneers (1-1) on the scoreboard at 6:01 of the third period. John Lee (13:09) and Drew Shore (17:39) followed with goals to pull the Pioneers within one.

Boston University goalie Kieran Millan made 11 of his 35 saves in the third period. He had 17 stops in the first period. Murray finished with 33 saves for DU.

DU outshot BU 38-37, but was held scoreless on the man-advantage for the second consecutive game, finishing 0-for-6.
