AIR FORCE ACADEMY — When Air Force coach Troy Calhoun says it’s time for his football team to win, he’s not talking about just on Saturday.

After Monday afternoon’s practice, Calhoun expanded the directive to include the whole week. He said the Falcons got off to a good start in preparation for Saturday’s game at New Mexico.

Air Force has lost three consecutive games and is 3-4 overall, 0-3 in the Mountain West.

“You have to win each day and be persistent and consistent in the way you prepare,” Calhoun said. “That’s the way it always will be at the Air Force Academy. It’s imperative that we practice exceptionally well. We’re going to get our best shot from our opponent, we know that. Deep down, that’s the way you play football.”

Calhoun has his methods of keeping his players focused on the upcoming game. But some of his players are peeking ahead.

Senior cornerback Anthony Wright said he believes the Falcons have to win all five remaining games.

“We came down a rough stretch that didn’t go the way we wanted it to,” Wright said of consecutive losses to Notre Dame (59-33), San Diego State (41-27) and Boise State (37-26). “We have to finish strong and that starts Saturday.

“We’re not thinking less of our opponents, but we need to do what we have to do to get a win.”

To the top. Even though the subject of Air Force possibly moving to the Big East Conference has quieted for the time being, it’s a subject of concern in Washington, D.C.

A spokesperson for secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley said the secretary is aware of the discussions that have occurred and if and when a decision is made on a possible move it will involve coordination between his office in Washington and academy superintendent Lt. Gen. Michael Gould.

Footnote. The Nov. 5 Air Force-Army football game at Falcon Stadium has been moved from Versus to CBS. The game time remains 1:30 p.m.
