DENVER—A building that houses homeless women in Denver is getting a paint makeover as part of a national project to spruce up shelters.

Professionals on Monday are painting dorms that house 50 women a night at the Delores Project. They’re replacing a stark white with a softer white and adding accents of sea green and pale blue.

Executive director Terrell Curtis said she picked the colors because they seemed comforting and calming. She said most women who stay there have experienced some crisis and she hopes the new look provides a little bit of comfort.

The project is a joint effort by Benjamin Moore Paints, the Painting & Decorating Contractors of America and the U.S. Conference of Mayors. They’re painting a shelter in each of the 50 states and in Washington, D.C.
