A high school in Adams County has been shut down by foul odor.
Students at Adams City High School, 7200 Quebec Parkway, Commerce City, were sent home early today because of a “funky, sulphur, gas-like odor,” said John Albright, an Adams County School District 14 spokesman.
Maintenance crews over the weekend worked on cleaning out grease traps in the school’s kitchen and the work likely resulted in the lingering stench, Albright said.
Students were initially sent to the school’s gymnasium at about 8:50 a.m. and school officials then decided to release them.
School buses picked up students who ride buses and dropped them off at their regular stops, Albright said.
The school, grades 9 through 12, has about 1,750 students. Officials anticipate that the school will run on its regular schedule Tuesday.
