CONCORD, N.H. — Mitt Romney officially became a Republican candidate for president on the New Hampshire ballot Monday, stopping by the Statehouse in a well-choreographed visit to sign the papers and joking that he was “hoping that this time it will take.”

John Sununu, a former New Hampshire governor, introduced him to a crowd of more than 100 people gathered for a short rally. In a brief speech, Romney kept the focus on his calls for a more limited government.

“I love this country; I love the principles upon which this country was founded,” Romney said. “This exceptional nation will not be stopped by anything other than government becoming too big and too intrusive and too fat in our lives.”
