CANON CITY, Colo.—Prisoners at the Centennial Correctional Facility bought themselves a top-of-the-line computer, high-definition monitor and on-demand movies with money collected from prisoners’ purchases of candy bars, hygiene products and medicines.

Prison officials say the inmates raised $2.5 million for the program that also provides 22 cable stations.

According to KRDO-TV ( ), all of the 948 cells are outfitted with high-tech kiosks.

The Department of Corrections says canteen funds can only be used to benefit inmates, not build new prisons or keep budget-strapped facilities open.
