Rachael Flatt of Colorado Springs was in third place after the short program Friday at Skate Canada International in Mississauga, Ontario, an International Skating Union Grand Prix event.
Flatt has 54.23 points, trailing 14-year-old Russian phenom Elizaveta Tuktamysheva (59.75) and American Ashley Wagner (54.50). The 19-year-old Flatt, a silver medalist at the U.S. nationals last winter, was 12th at the world championships. “I haven’t started out this well at a Grand Prix in a while,” she said. “I’m very pleased.”
Soccer: UCLA routs CU women.
Sydney Leroux had a hat trick as No. 6-ranked UCLA (13-1-3, 6-1-2 Pac-12) routed the University of Colorado women’s soccer team (4-11-2, 1-7-1) 8-0 in Boulder.
• In a matchup to determine the Sun Belt Conference regular-season title, the University of Denver women’s team (15-4, 9-2) managed only four shots on goal and lost 1-0 to host North Texas (13-4-2, 8-1-1) in Denton.
• Gyasi Zardes’ goal in the 88th minute gave visiting Cal State-Bakersfield (10-2-4) a 1-0 win over the DU men’s team (4-9-3).
• Megan Woodworth tied the game in the 81st minute, then won it for Colorado Mines with a header in the 87th minute, as the Orediggers (13-2-2, 9-2-2 RMAC), ranked No. 23 in Division II, defeated No. 25 Metro State (12-5-1, 8-5-1) 2-1 at Auraria Field.
DU netters fall.
Faimie Kingsley had eight kills for the University of Denver volleyball team (10-14, 7-5 Sun Belt), which was swept 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-13) by host Western Kentucky (24-3, 11-1).
• Kerra Schroeder had 22 kills and 21 digs, and Nikki Kildow added 14 kills and five blocks, but host Oregon State (13-10, 5-8 Pac-12) rallied in the fifth set to defeat Colorado (5-16, 0-14) 3-2 (27-25, 25-20, 21-25, 23-25, 15-9).
