SHANGHAI — U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy won $2 million in the Shanghai Masters on Sunday, beating Anthony Kim with a par on the first hole of a playoff.

McIlroy holed a 2-foot putt for the victory after Kim missed a 3-footer. McIlroy had a chance to win in regulation, but the 22-year-old star from Northern Ireland missed an 8-foot birdie putt. He closed with an even-par 72 to match Kim (69) at 18-under.

The $2 million first prize is the richest in golf.

Hunter Mahan (70) and South Korea’s Noh Seung-yul (73) tied for third at 13-under.

Sergio Garcia held off fellow Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez to win the Andalucia Masters in Sotogrande, Spain, by one shot for his second straight European Tour victory.

Garcia shook off two early bogeys with two birdies on a flawless back nine to card an even-par 71 and finish with a 6-under total of 278. Jimenez shot a 70.

Bo Van Pelt ran away with the Asia Pacific Classic in Selangor, Malaysia, birdieing five of the last eight holes for a 7-under 64 and a six-stroke victory.

Van Pelt finished at 23-under while fellow PGA Tour member Jeff Overton was second after a 69.

• Top-ranked Yani Tseng won the Suzhou Taihu Ladies Open in China for her 11th worldwide victory of the season, closing with a 6-under 66 to beat Sweden’s Pernilla Lindberg by seven strokes in the Ladies European Tour event.

Kvitova climbs to No. 2 with win

ISTANBUL — Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova won her first WTA Championships title, beating Victoria Azarenka 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 for a victory that will also put her at No. 2 in the world rankings.

Kvitova started the year outside the top 30 and was playing in the season-ending tournament for the first time. She has won six titles this year, the same number as No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki and twice as many as Azarenka.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga rallied from a set and a break down to beat Juan Martin Del Potro 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 in the final of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, claiming his second title of the season and seventh overall.

Marin Cilic won his first title of the season and sixth of his career, beating Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in the final of the St. Petersburg Open in Russia.

Brazilian wins Pan Am marathon

GUADALAJARA, Mexico — Solonei Silva of Brazil won the men’s marathon at the Pan American Games on the final day of the competition.

In men’s basketball, the U.S. won the bronze medal by beating the Dominican Republic 94-92.

In the medals table, the United States finished far ahead with 92 gold and 236 overall. Cuba, which came on strong in the second week of competition, finished in second place with 58 gold and 136 overall.
