Twenty-two Halloween zombies in Durango were on the prowl for bail, not brains, on Tuesday after an overnight of the living dead turned too lively.

The estimated 1,500-zombie herd failed to get a permit from the city for the event, to begin with. Then, instead of chowing down on human flesh, they tossed trash cans, bottles, sticks and stones at officers.

The moaning mob also damaged cars, trucks, parking meters and flower planters, Durango police said Tuesday. Some complied after police used pepper spray.

The arrests included six females and 16 males ranging in age from 17 to 50.

Most arrests were misdemeanors, but one downtown lurcher, Brandon Friend, 20, of Durango, was charged with felony assault on a peace officer.

A 17-year-old boy, who was not named because he is a juvenile, was charged with felony menacing, possession of a dangerous or illegal weapon and underage consumption of alcohol.

City crews worked until 4 a.m. to clean up the mess.
