Trout fishing has picked up at many area waters, including Boyd, Lon Hagler, Aurora, Chatfield and Cherry Creek reservoirs.

Cooling temperatures and recent stockings are two reasons. Walleye fishing is good for those willing to find schools of shad during the day. Jigging spoons are effective right now. Shore fishers are doing well around dark with minnow-style lures.

Don’t overlook streams, such as Clear Creek or the Big Thompson, for some excellent brown trout action; streamers or Rapala-style lures continue to be effective.

South Park reservoir boat ramps are closed for the season. Most Front Range reservoirs allow boating through November.

PICTURE THIS: Send success stories

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is looking for big-game hunting stories and photos, and so are we. Hunters who were successful during Colorado’s 2011 big-game seasons are invited to submit stories and photos to be posted on a “Hunter Testimonials” page featured on the Parks and Wildlife website. The best photos may be used as covers for upcoming regulations brochures or in future editions of Colorado Outdoors magazine.

Likewise, The Denver Post would like to hear your stories and see photos from your hunt this fall. Photos should be uploaded at and stories e-mailed to swilloughby@denverpost.com.

Hunting stories should be limited to 250 words, and those sent to CPW should be accompanied with high-resolution, digital photos detailing the experience.

All submissions will be edited and reviewed to ensure that rules and hunting regulations were followed. Publication is not guaranteed, and all submissions become the property of CPW.
