Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora is cutting 24 civilian positions, a move officials attributed to the U.S. Secretary of Defense’s plans to keep costs at 2010 levels.

The layoffs, with 17 to be implemented by April and the rest by October, will largely hit support positions, such as civil engineering and services, officials said. But some command staff positions will also be eliminated.

“We are committed to minimizing the impact of Air Force budgetary reductions and organizational changes on Buckley’s civilian workforce,” said Col. Dan Dant, 460th Space Wing commander, in a statement. “We’ll be taking every step we can and use all means available to take care of those affected by these reductions and minimize impacts to our nationally-important mission.”

Buckley officials noted a 2010 memo from the Defense secretary that directed civilian staffing costs stay within fiscal year 2010 levels.

As part of the overall restructuring, 9,000 positions will be eliminated throughout the Air Force. However, the Air Force has added or will add 5,900 positions in areas of priorities such as the nuclear enterprise, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.
