NEW YORK — As New York City deals with terrorism threats and various violent crimes, carrying a little bit of marijuana is still a big deal.
There are more than 50,000 arrests in the city each year for low-level pot possession — more than for any other crime: about one of every seven cases in the city’s criminal courts.
Critics say the arrests stem partly from police stopping and frisking people who officers say meet the description of crime suspects. Most of those arrested are black and Latino men. Police say the strategy’s main goal is to take guns off the street and prevent crime.
