GREELEY — A drop of blood from Pope John Paul II has been given to a Roman Catholic Church in Greeley.

The Rev. Pawel Zborowski of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church told the Greeley Tribune that he was presented with the drop of blood on a cloth encased in a decorative gold cross last month in Poland. It was presented to him by Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, archbishop of Krakow.

Zborowski said the blood came from medical tests performed on John Paul before he died.

The relic is highly prized because it is directly associated with John Paul, who the Vatican says is on the path to sainthood. John Paul died in 2005.

Zborowski said he presents the relic at Mass and hopes to build a display for it. It is believed to be the only drop of John Paul II’s blood in the western U.S. The Associated Press
