ASPEN, Colo.—A former monk in training at St. Benedict’s Monastery in Old Snowmass has been sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted sexual assault on a child under age 15.

The Aspen Times reports ( ) 73-year-old Wilfred Laurent Carignan appeared in Pitkin County Court Monday to enter his plea.

Carignan worked as a beekeeper and trained as a monk at the monastery from 1996 to 2001. The sexual acts on the boy, who is now in his 20s, occurred between Jan. 1, 2001, and July 10, 2003 away from the monastery.

The monastery received a letter and reported the crime.

Carignan is already serving prison sentences of six to eight years to life for convictions on two counts of sexual assault of a child in Delta County.
