COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Officials at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs say they’re planning to seek a branch of the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

The Gazette reports that school’s new Lane Center for Academic Health Sciences building will include space for a branch campus of the medical school (). The 56,000-square-foot building is expected to open in January 2014.

About two years ago, a Colorado Springs group exploring economic development spearheaded a study on the feasibility of starting a CU medical school branch. Dan Meyers, communications director for the CU medical school, says the plan is still on the table.

Meyers says the school has not yet applied for accreditation but is assessing the new branch. He did not give a timeline for a decision.
