A severed bison head found in the front yard of a Boulder home, it turns out, belonged to the homeowner.

Police and the owner’s two roommates were alarmed after finding the head propped on a rock at about 1 a.m. Sunday in the 900 block of 18th Street.

Authorities immediately checked on Ralphie, the mascot for the University of Colorado Buffaloes.

Police spokeswoman Kim Kobel said by e-mail that the owner — whose name was not released — had recently returned from a visit to a buffalo ranch in Nebraska, where he was given the bison head as a souvenir. The bison had been butchered at the ranch.

The owner was drying the head so he could display it on a wall but neglected to tell his roommates, she said.
