Denver police released a sketch this afternoon of a man who stole a sedan with a 3-year-old inside earlier this week.

The child’s nanny had stopped to help an older man who had fallen down on the street at East Sixth Avenue and Colorado Boulevard at about 4 p.m. Monday.

When she jumped out, a stranger jumped in and drove off. The nanny chased after the car pounding on the window, police said.

After hitting two cars, the thief ditched the vehicle and the unharmed child at the mouth of an alley about a mile away.

The man who took the car is described as white, about 6 feet tall, 20 to 30 years old. He wore a baseball cap and his hair in a ponytail.

Anyone with information can call Denver police at 720-913-2000 or Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tips also can be sent by text to CRIMES (274637) with the title DMCS, or by e-mail to .
