DENVER—The city of Denver has spent about $430,000 on overtime and materials on Occupy Denver protests but expects to be able to cover those costs within its budget.
The figures announced Monday cover early October through Nov. 13. It doesn’t include regular staffing expenses as a previous Occupy cost estimate did.
Last week, the Colorado State Patrol said it spent more than $351,000 policing the protests, including regular pay.
Occupy Denver supporter Jeannie Hartley says authorities have overreacted to the movement and said the price tag isn’t the fault of protesters.
The most tense day came Oct. 29 when about 2,000 people marched toward the Capitol and police fired mace and pepper bullets to break up the crowd. Later, police moved in to prevent protesters from establishing an encampment, arresting 15.
