AVALANCHE AWARENESS

Friends of Berthoud Pass is offering one-day avalanche awareness classes at Winter Park’s Mary Jane ski area in December and March. The collective’s one-day “Introduction to Avalanches” course is considered an entry-level awareness class for resort riders pondering play in the backcountry but is not a substitute for intensive, accredited avalanche-certification classes. Beginning with a two-hour classroom session, followed by outdoor clinics at Mary Jane, the course outlines the basics of reading and interpreting avalanche bulletins, recognizing weather, terrain and snowpack conditions that contribute to avalanche danger, avoiding avalanche terrain and using avalanche safety gear. The classes are offered Dec. 17-18 and March 10-11 at Mary Jane base area. Friends of Berthoud Pass members pay $40 and nonmembers pay $70. Learn more at .
