PLATTEVILLE, Colo.—The former police chief in Platteville is accused of using Social Security numbers from fellow police officers to buy gas for his personal vehicle.
Forty-seven-year-old Scottie Alan Smith faces felony embezzlement and identity theft charges. Smith turned himself into the Morgan County Detention Center on Monday and was released on $5,000 bond.
Smith is suspected of looking up personal information on a law enforcement database to obtain officers’ Social Security numbers. An arrest affidavit by a Weld County District Attorney investigator says the last four digits constitute PIN numbers for department fuel cards.
Smith is accused of buying $392 worth of fuel using information from two of his officers.
He didn’t immediately return a message left at his home.
