DENVER—Federal officials say initial water quality tests show levels of toxic chemicals are declining after a gasoline-like substance was detected seeping from a Denver-area refinery into a creek.

The initial report released Friday says the toxic chemicals are rapidly decreasing because of evaporation and dilution. The final report is expected to take up to 10 days.

The seep from the Suncor Energy refinery into Sand Creek was detected this week. The federal Environmental Protection Agency says gasoline contains known and suspected carcinogens.

Suncor says a crew of about 60 people working around-the-clock has stopped the material from getting into the creek.

Officials have told Suncor to clean up any signs of the seep by March 1.
