Keenan, who has been at Fort Carson about 2 1/2 years, was commissioned into the Army in 1986 after earning her nursing degree from Henderson State University, Arkansas. She also holds a master’s degree in nursing administration from the Medical College of Georgia and a master’s of strategic studies from the Army War College, according to a biography from Fort Carson. She has held a number of nursing positions at military units in the United States, Korea and Germany, and served with the 67th Combat Support Hospital (Forward) at Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo. Before her assignment as head of the Medical Department Activity at Fort Carson, Keenan was chief of staff of the Army Warrior Transition Command at the Pentagon. Keenan’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters and the Army Commendation Medal with four oak leaf clusters. She has earned the Expert Field Medical Badge, the Parachutists Badge and the Air Assault Badge. She was an Army Congressional Fellow in 2001. A Defense Department spokesman said officers occasionally get such a leap-frog promotions if they’re being assigned to a position that holds a higher rank. COLORADO SPRINGS — The commander of the Fort Carson hospital is on the fast track.

Col. Jimmie O. Keenan has been nominated for promotion to major general — that’s right, two stars at once. She’ll take over as the chief of the Army Nurse Corps at its headquarters in Falls Church, Va., the Defense Department announced Friday.

Keenan, who has been at Fort Carson for about 2½ years, was commissioned into the Army in 1986 after earning her nursing degree from Henderson State University in Arkansas.
